Visiting Health and Supportive Services Offers a Helping Hand for New
Parents

While the birth of a child is both joyous and exciting, it can also be
aptly described as tiring. With so many responsibilities to contend with
on top of taking care of the new baby as best they can, new parents
could usually benefit from a helping hand or two. That little bit of
extra help is just what Hunterdon Healthcare’s Mother’s Helper
Service specializes in.

The Mother’s Helper Service is an in-home assistance program that
caters to the needs of new parents, whether it be their first or third
child. The Mother’s Helper Service is provided by Hunterdon
Healthcare’s Visiting Health and Supportive Services and offers either
a Companion or Certified Home Health Aide.

The Mother’s Helper Companions have completed specialized infant care
classes. They can assist new parents with baby care and household
chores, enabling parents to have some time for themselves. The
Companions also can provide:
● Infant care and sibling supervision
● Diaper changes and dressing
● Meal planning and preparation
● Grocery shopping
● Light housework
● Assist with errands
● Make beds and change linens
● Take baby or siblings for a walk
● Read and play games with siblings

The Certified Home Health Aides are specially trained to provide
personal care to mom and baby. In addition to all the services the
Companions provide, the Home Health Aide services also include hands on
care such as:
● Assistance with bathing/shampooing/skin care for baby
● Hair care
● Light massage/foot massage
● Infant feeding
A Registered Nurse will accompany the Certified Home Health Aide on the
first visit to develop a plan of care per the parent’s specifications
and needs.

The Companions and Certified Home Health Aides can be scheduled in 4
hour blocks of time with initial visit costs ranging from $105 for
Companions and $165 for Certified Home Health Aides. Additional 4 hour
block visits cost $80 for Companions and $105 for Certified Home Health
Aides. Gift certificates are available for the Mother’s Helper
Service. If you are interested in scheduling the Mother’s Helper
Service or would like additional information please call 908-788-2562.

Colorectal Cancer Screening Program at Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center

The Cancer Education and Early Detection (CEED) program will be hosting
a community education program to discuss the FIT option for colorectal
screening on September 8th from 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. in the conference
room at Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center.

Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer related deaths
in both men and women. The risk for colorectal cancer increases with
age; more than 90% of all cases are diagnosed in individuals who are 50
or older. Individuals who have a family history of colorectal cancer or
polyps are at a higher risk for developing this cancer. There are
several risk factors that can be modified such as obesity, physical
inactivity, smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, a diet high in red and
processed meats, and a diet low in fruits and vegetables.

The American Cancer Society recommends that beginning at age 50 both
men and women who are at average risk for developing colorectal cancer
should begin screening. Screening can result in the identification and
removal of suspicious polyps before they become cancerous in addition to
the detection of cancer at an early stage. Screening guidelines for
colorectal cancer offer several options depending upon your health
status. It is important that you discuss with your health care provider
which option is the most appropriate for you. Screening options include
doing one of the following:
● A flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years
● A colonoscopy every 10 years
● A guaiac-based fecal occult blood test (gFOBT) or fecal
immunochemical test (FIT) every year

If you are concerned about not having insurance for these important
screening tests, coverage may be provided through the CEED grant at
Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center. Please call Marge Vellotti to
register for this program and for more information the CEED grant at
(908) 237-5409.

Hunterdon Medical Center’s Physical Therapy Offers Screening on Device
to Help Stroke and Neurological Patients

Imagine technology so advanced that it may help stroke and other
neurological patients to regain lost mobility and also may enable them
to achieve greater independence than they believed to be possible. This
highly sophisticated technology is available at Hunterdon Medical
Center. Hunterdon Medical Center’s Physical Therapy offers the NESS
L300 Foot Drop System to its outpatient locations. Central nervous
system injuries often result in foot drop--leading to instability and
difficulty walking. The NESS L300™ neuro-rehabilitation system is a
revolution in Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) technology,
designed to help patients experiencing foot drop to regain mobility and
help "normalize" walking and gait. On Monday, September 12th a
screening day for the NESS L300 Foot Drop System will be held from 8:00
a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Physical Therapy Office located at the
Sandhill Professional Building, 6 Sandhill Rd, Ste.101 in Flemington.
This is an opportunity for patients to try the product and see if it is
right for them.

The L300 uses wireless communication to "talk" to its components,
eliminating cumbersome wires and allowing the clinician the ability to
fine-tune settings while the patient is actually walking helping to make
it easier to walk on flat ground, uneven surfaces or climb stairs. This
device is worn on the lower-leg and foot in place of a foot brace. The
sensors help detect when the patient’s foot is in the air or on the
ground, and electrodes transmit painless electrical stimulation to the
peroneal nerve and anterior tibialis muscle to signal the calf muscle
and correct the gait. This user-friendly system is appropriate for a
broad range of conditions, including stroke, traumatic brain injury and
multiple sclerosis.

The screening is by appointment only. To schedule an appointment and
get pre-screened by phone, call 661-877-7020.

Hunterdon Hospice Will Offer Training for New Volunteers

Hunterdon Hospice has been providing care to families in this community
for over thirty years. Hospice is a special kind of care designed to
support and comfort people living with a terminal illness. When a
family receives hospice services a whole team of people are assigned to
see that they receive the most complete and comprehensive care possible;
and an incredibly important member of that team is the Hospice
Volunteer. Hospice volunteers receive training, which teaches them
about what hospice care is and it prepares them to provide care to
patients and their families. But hospice volunteers are not all direct
patient care volunteers. Many of our volunteers work in our office,
some help with our fundraisers, and some volunteers help us deliver
medicine and supplies to patients. In addition, Hunterdon Hospice is
looking for hairdressers who want to volunteer their time to cut and
style patients’ hair and also certified massage therapists to donate
their time to help comfort patient patients and their families.
Hunterdon Hospice is now accepting applications for its training
program, which begins on October 7th.

Volunteers provide valuable emotional support to both patients and
families and keep families connected to the community. They fill many
of the gaps and help wherever needed, such as providing respite to
caregivers and family members, running errands, being a companion to the
patient, and helping with household tasks. “Our volunteers are such
amazing people and are always willing to help out however needed. When
families are in need it is the little things in life that are important.
Volunteers form relationships with their patients and the patients’
loved ones. They provide whatever support is needed to enable the family
to continue to function,” explains Joy Stump, Volunteer Coordinator
for Hunterdon Hospice. Stump added, “I continuously hear from our
volunteers about how helping out with Hunterdon Hospice helps them keep
life in perspective. They always tell me how surprised they are by how
much joy and happiness doing this work brings them. They experience
moments of laughter and friendship. Patients teach them about life and
how to live your life with courage, dignity and always hope. Our
volunteers go home at the end of the day knowing they have helped make a
difference in someone’s life.”

The training program covers all aspects of volunteering so the
volunteer is prepared to be with patients and their families.
Hunterdon Hospice is a Medicare-certified, non-profit organization,
which coordinates home-based supportive services in the homes of its
patients. Training classes meet from 12:30 pm - 4:30 pm on Fridays
starting October 7th and will go through November 16th. The classes
will be held at the Hospice Office located at 215 Route 31 South in
Flemington.

To arrange for an interview contact Joy Stump, Volunteer Coordinator at
908-788-2573 or e-mail her at stump.joy@hunterdonhealthcare.org. To
learn more about Hunterdon Hospice, log onto our website at
